Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has announced that the first 20 doctors who completed their Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees from the Maldives National University (MNU) have officially begun service after completing their internship.

The group represents the inaugural batch of medical graduates from MNU’s School of Medicine, which held its first graduation ceremony on 31 October 2024. Following the completion of their one-year internship, the doctors are now eligible to serve in the country’s health sector.

IGMH stated that the new doctors have successfully completed their internship, during which they cared for patients, responded to emergencies, and gained practical experience that transformed their academic knowledge into compassionate clinical practice. The hospital also extended appreciation to the mentors, clinicians, and other medical professionals who supported the interns throughout their training.

The MNU School of Medicine, established in 2018, offers a five-year undergraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree based on the curriculum of Malaysia’s Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The programme is implemented with UKM’s technical guidance and supported by the Government of Pakistan.

The course, which costs USD 1,000 per month, is included under the Maldivian government’s free degree scheme. During their studies, the first batch of students completed their surgical modules at IGMH and undertook hands-on clinical training at ADK Hospital.

With their entry into service, the Maldives welcomes a new generation of locally trained doctors contributing to the nation’s healthcare system.
