Vehicles designated for the government’s planned taxi service have begun arriving in the Maldives, as preparations continue for the launch of the new state-run taxi line.
Out of a total planned fleet of 150 vehicles, an initial shipment of 60 cars has already arrived in Male’. A further 90 vehicles are expected in a second shipment scheduled to arrive on 29 March. The service is set to be launched on 2 April and will operate through a dedicated mobile application.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen stated that the remaining vehicles are expected within the coming days, with ongoing efforts focused on meeting the planned launch date.
The Managing Director of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, Ahmed Saudi, said recruitment and training of drivers are currently underway. He added that the system and application required to operate the service are also being finalised, with the taxi line expected to run on a 24-hour basis.
According to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, the initiative aims to improve accessibility to taxis and enhance the overall quality of service for the public.
The fleet will consist entirely of environmentally friendly vehicles and will include three different sizes. The cars are being supplied by Changan Automobile.
The government expects the introduction of the service to bring improvements to the taxi sector.
