An e-petition has been submitted to the People’s Majlis seeking measures to address foreigners and tourists wearing revealing clothing, including bikinis, in public areas on inhabited islands across the Maldives.

The petition was submitted through the newly inaugurated Electronic Petition System, which allows residents to submit and track petitions online.

The petition, initiated by Zamzam Farish, argued that tourists and foreigners wearing revealing clothing in public places could undermine Islamic values and the cultural traditions inherited from Maldivian ancestors. It noted that this behaviour is of significant concern to many citizens and may have a negative influence on young Maldivian children.

Highlighting the issue as a barrier to raising children with an Islamic upbringing, the petition called for three measures to address the matter. These included strengthening the enforcement of existing regulations, introducing new laws to guide action against violations, and establishing a system to ensure strict legal measures against those wearing revealing clothing in public.

The petition, with over 500 signatures at the time of writing, is open for the general public to add their support.
