First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has announced plans to file a civil lawsuit against the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), its chairman Fayyaz Ismail, and activist Mariyam Zubair over allegations made against her son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu.

The allegations, made by MDP activist Mariyam Zubair, claim that Umair was involved in the decision to ban vaping in the Maldives. Addressing these claims at a press conference held in Malé, Sajidha stated that the accusations were politically motivated and had compromised her son’s dignity and security. She emphasised that her primary concern was the safety and well-being of her children.

Sajidha clarified that she was pursuing legal action in her personal capacity as a mother and without government involvement. She also expressed concern over the increasing involvement of children in political disputes, stating that her actions aimed to address this issue in the long term.

Following her statement, lawyer Aishath Azima Shakoor confirmed that civil charges had been filed against Fayyaz Ismail, Mariyam Zubair, and the MDP. She indicated that while the case was being pursued as a civil matter, the allegations could have criminal implications. Azima stated that the case would be submitted to court within the week but declined to provide further details.

No Truth to Vape Allegations Against Son, Says First Lady

Sajidha also denied claims that her son Umair has used vape or tobacco products. She described the allegations as harmful to his education and personal development, expressing concern that they could negatively impact his future and create uncertainty regarding his safety.

The statement further addressed the targeting of the President’s other children, including his eldest son and his eight-year-old son. Sajidha stated that while she had previously refrained from responding to criticism related to her husband’s political views or responsibilities, she now intended to take action against those targeting her children, particularly those who are underage.

Azima reiterated that the legal action aimed to ensure accountability and protect Umair’s security, while also highlighting broader concerns regarding the involvement of children in political disputes.
