First Lady Meets Japanese Ambassador to Strengthen Education Cooperation

Ishigami Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, paid a courtesy call on First Lady Sajidha Mohamed at the Official Residence of the President, Muleeaage, yesterday.

During the meeting, the First Lady and the Ambassador reflected on the close and enduring relations between the Maldives and Japan, marking 58 years of diplomatic ties this year. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in the education sector, particularly through initiatives supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aimed at capacity-building and human resource development.

According to the President’s Office, the pair also highlighted the contributions of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) working across Maldivian islands, especially in specialised education and physical education. The First Lady expressed her appreciation for Japan’s ongoing support in improving educational opportunities and facilities nationwide, noting the country’s role in advancing key development initiatives in infrastructure, telecommunications, and human resource development.

Before concluding, Ambassador Ishigami reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development journey and commended the First Lady’s efforts in promoting education and social welfare.
