A fish processing plant established in Hulhumeedhoo, Addu City, has been officially opened, marking a step towards strengthening fisheries operations in the southern Maldives.

According to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), the facility is intended to purchase and process fish sourced from the southern region, supporting local fishermen and improving supply chain efficiency.

The plant was inaugurated by State Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Aminath Hussain Shareef at a ceremony attended by MIFCO Chief Executive Officer Farhath Shaheer, along with company officials and representatives from the Addu Fisheries Complex.

MIFCO stated that the facility is expected to enhance profitability for fisheries stakeholders while providing a safe and reliable environment for processing fish. The plant is equipped with blast freezing technology to preserve fish, with products now available for purchase at the MIFCO Hulhumeedhoo outlet. Efforts are also underway to identify distributors to expand product availability across Addu City.

The company is continuing its expansion initiatives through investments in capacity building and infrastructure, supported by government backing and multilateral financing.
