Fisheries Ministry and MIFCO Restore Ice Plants

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, in collaboration with MIFCO (Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company), has restored three ice plants, alleviating the difficulties fishermen encounter in acquiring ice.

The restored ice plants are located in L. Fonadhoo, Lh. Felivaru, GA. Gemanafushi, and GA. Kolamaafushi has a combined daily ice production capacity of 25 tonnes.

Additionally, a MIFCO team is working to bring the GA Dhevvadhoo ice plant back into operation.

The Ministry of Fisheries has acknowledged that maintenance of ice plants operated by MIFCO across the Maldives had been neglected after their transfer to FENAKA Corporation. To further support the fishing industry, the Ministry is developing new ice plant facilities in nine locations: HA. Dhidhdhoo, AA. Rasdhoo, L.Maamendhoo, Dh. Meedhoo, GDh. Rathafandhoo, Lh. Naifaru, M. Veyvah, GDh. Fiyoaree, and L. Maavah.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources announced plans to create 200 opportunities for the installation of Refrigerated Seawater (RSW) systems on fishing vessels, a crucial step in maintaining fish quality.

The Ministry is also working to facilitate easy access to bank loans for fishing boats, supporting the industry’s ongoing operations and development.
