Fisheries Ministry Announces Plan for Sustainable Development of Lobster Fishery
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has unveiled a new plan aimed at fostering sustainable growth in the Maldivian lobster fishery.
The plan is anchored in four main objectives. Firstly, it seeks to align lobster fishing activities with ecosystem-based management principles, applying a precautionary approach to support long-term resource sustainability. Secondly, the ministry intends to establish policies based on both ecological and socio-economic data specific to the lobster fishery, which will guide future practices.
The third component emphasises strengthening systems for monitoring, control, and surveillance of lobster fishing and trade, aiming to improve data collection and reporting processes across the sector. A fourth key focus is on raising awareness among stakeholders and the public about lobster species and the importance of sustainable fishing methods.
The ministry noted that these strategies are designed to support sustainable management and development of the lobster fishery, ensuring the protection and viability of the resource. It added that while resorts and guesthouses represent the primary market for commercial lobster, local restaurants and markets also play a significant role.
Discussions are also ongoing with international partners to explore further development opportunities for the Maldivian fishing industry, with particular emphasis on expanding the diamondback squid fishery.
