According to the union, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto contains three commitments aimed at addressing longstanding concerns of yellowfin tuna fishermen. These include commencing the purchase of yellowfin tuna through the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), setting a floor price between MVR 80 and MVR 100 for yellowfin tuna, and ensuring the supply of fuel at the base rate while improving access to ice.
The BKMU stated that it has repeatedly urged the administration to implement these pledges since it took office. The union said fishermen remain disillusioned, noting that its efforts to engage with the government have produced no results.
The decision to hold a peaceful protest was taken following the union’s annual meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday. The BKMU said the demonstration will take place after the meeting as the government has not addressed concerns raised by yellowfin tuna fishermen.
The union has called on fishermen across the country to participate in the protest.
