The Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union’s (BKMU) protest over the government’s failure to raise the floor price for yellowfin tuna is currently under way, with fishermen taking their demonstration from land to sea.
Fishermen set off from Hulhumale Kanneli harbour this afternoon after beginning the protest in the morning. Ahmed Shareef from the fishing vessel Niru 7 said they are demonstrating because “fishermen’s rights have been suppressed,” leaving many in increasingly dire situations. He said they are prepared to remain at sea “for two days or three days” if necessary, until the government upholds the commitments made to them.
Protesters are rallying under the slogan “We won’t sail, we can’t take it anymore,” reflecting growing frustration within the industry.
The protest was launched after BKMU’s repeated appeals to the administration produced no results. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto pledged to begin purchasing yellowfin tuna through MIFCO, set a floor price between MVR 80 and MVR 100, and provide fuel at the base rate while improving access to ice — promises the union says remain unfulfilled.
BKMU decided to stage a peaceful demonstration following its annual meeting, noting that fishermen’s concerns have gone unanswered for months. As the protest continues at sea, the union has called on fishermen across the country to join the action, which coincides with Fishermen’s Day.
