The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced that seven ballot boxes will be used for the upcoming North Hithadhoo by-election, with five to be placed in Addu City and two in Malé for voters residing in the capital.
According to the voter list released by the commission, a total of 4,121 people are eligible to vote in the by-election, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 June.
The commission stated that re-registration for voting opened at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and will remain open until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, 18 May.
Two candidates are contesting the North Hithadhoo parliamentary seat. They are Ahmed Saeed representing the People’s National Congress and Abdulla Sodiq representing the Maldivian Democratic Party.
The North Hithadhoo seat became vacant following a ruling by the Supreme Court of the Maldives involving former MP Mohamed Sinan.
Sinan, who was elected to parliament in 2024, was found to have failed to settle an outstanding debt in accordance with a court judgment, leading to the loss of his parliamentary seat.
