Five Charged Over Alleged MVR 4 Million Apartment Theft in Malé

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has filed charges against five people accused of stealing nearly MVR 4 million from an apartment at Nalahiya Residence in Malé City.
According to the PGO, the alleged theft took place at around 9:02 p.m. on 15 March at the apartment building in the Maafannu district. Charges were filed at the Criminal Court on 25 June.
The five accused are Ahmed Faris of M. Asia, Malé, Jazeel Mohamed of Jazeela Manzil, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, Ismail Asif of Daarul Awwal, R. Maduvvari, Mohamed Afrah of Moonlight Villa, S. Meedhoo, and Mohamed Noor Ahmed of Kasthoorimaage, Lh. Naifaru.
The PGO said the suspects are accused of breaking into two money safes inside the apartment and stealing MVR 3,992,000 in cash. Maldives Police Service previously announced in April that MVR 50,000 of the stolen money had been recovered.
All five have been charged under Section 211(a) of the Penal Code with knowingly exerting unauthorised control over another person’s property. The offence carries a mandatory prison sentence of three years, two months and 12 days.
In addition, Faris, Jazeel and Noor have each been charged with criminal trespass under Section 230(a) of the Penal Code and criminal property damage under Section 220(a) for allegedly entering the apartment unlawfully and damaging the bedroom doors and the two safes. Each of these offences carries a mandatory prison sentence of four months and 24 days.
The PGO has also requested the court to order the suspects to compensate for the value of the money allegedly stolen.
