Part of the floor of a house collapsed yesterday during excavation work for a construction project in the Maafannu ward of Male’ City.

The incident occurred on Naseemee Hingun, where a section of the floor of a house adjacent to the construction site gave way while digging was underway on the neighbouring plot. Reports indicated that a person fell through the collapsed section of the floor, although no official details on injuries were available.

Eyewitnesses said the collapse happened as excavation work was being carried out next door. Images shared on social media showed the affected area submerged to hip depth, suggesting the formation of a sinkhole beneath the structure.

Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim visited the site following the incident and met with residents of the affected house to assess the situation.

The Male’ City Council has not issued an official statement, and further information about the cause of the collapse and the condition of those involved remains unavailable.

The incident is the latest in a series of construction-related accidents reported in the capital. In June this year, the wall of a house collapsed during construction work on an adjacent plot.

Residents have repeatedly expressed concern over inadequate safety measures at construction sites in Male’, warning that poor site security and unsafe excavation practices are placing neighbouring homes at risk.
