Foreign Vessel Intercepted After Illegally Entering Maldivian Waters

A foreign vessel that illegally entered Maldivian waters has been intercepted during a surveillance operation carried out by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps.

According to MNDF, the vessel was detected using a drone during an aerial patrol and was later intercepted by the Coast Guard’s Special Boat Squadron. The vessel has since been taken into custody. The authorities have not disclosed the nationality of the vessel or the nature of its activities at the time of interception.
The MNDF also confirmed that two Sri Lankan fishing boats were seized last Wednesday night for illegally operating within the Maldives’ Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The vessels were located 137 nautical miles north of V. Fottheyomuli and are currently being transported to Malé.
