Former State Minister Ordered to Pay MVR 1 Million in Loan Dispute
The Civil Court has ordered former State Minister for Housing, Akram Kamaluddin, to pay over MVR 1 million to former Thimarafushi constituency parliamentarian, Mohamed Mustafa.
The ruling comes after Mustafa filed a civil suit claiming that cheques issued by Akram for a loan had bounced. According to the claim, Akram had borrowed MVR 1.7 million from Mustafa, which included MVR 400,000 and USD 50,000.
Mustafa sought repayment for three cheques—MVR 300,000, MVR 200,000, and MVR 600,000—issued from Akram’s account with the Bank of Maldives (BML). In addition, Mustafa requested MVR 100,000 to cover legal fees, bringing the total claim to MVR 1.8 million.
In response, Akram argued that he had already repaid MVR 400,000 of the borrowed money, although the court found evidence for only MVR 200,000 of this repayment, which was made in the presence of a witness.
The court ruled that Mustafa’s claim for MVR 100,000 in legal fees was unsupported by evidence and therefore could not be recovered. However, Akram was ordered to pay the outstanding MVR 400,000 and USD 50,000 to Mustafa by 19th July.
