Former State Minister of the Ministry of Housing and chair of the former housing committee, Akram Kamaluddin, has responded to recent claims made by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) regarding the allocation of plots under the Binveriya social housing scheme.

In a statement issued yesterday, Akram Kamaluddin stated that the plots allocated under the scheme were done so in accordance with the land use plan provided by HDC. This comes in light of HDC’s assertions that certain plots in Hulhumale’ Phase II, allocated under the social housing scheme, included adjoining roads.

HDC released a video posted yesterday featuring Mohamed Siraj, Assistant Manager of Public Relations, stating that plots were currently being allocated to scheme recipients, with construction of outer walls underway in some cases. However, Siraj highlighted challenges faced in the allotment process due to the inclusion of adjoining roads in some plot allocations.

In response, Akram accused HDC of deliberately misleading the public with their video message. He reiterated that plot allocations were carried out in accordance with HDC’s land use plan, with the Ministry of Housing basing its decisions on the plans provided by the corporation.

Akram further alleged that challenges in plot allocation stemmed from contracts awarded to Chinese construction companies during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as Housing Minister. He claimed that these contracts, with indefinite periods, complicated efforts by the previous administration to allocate plots.

Additionally, Akram stated that the previous government had initially decided to relocate plots designated for flat development. Under the Binveriya Scheme, the previous administration had planned to issue 9,003 plots to 18,955 eligible recipients, with designated areas including Hulhumale’, Gulhifalhu, and Giraavarufalhu.
