Forty-Six Traffic Accidents Reported in Malé and Sinamalé Bridge Last Week

The Maldives Police Service has reported a total of 46 traffic accidents in Malé City and on the Sinamalé Bridge over the past week, resulting in injuries to eleven people.

According to police statistics released yesterday, the highest number of accidents occurred last Sunday and Monday, with eight incidents reported on each day. The following three days each recorded six accidents, while Friday saw a drop to four. The number of accidents rose again to six on Saturday.
Of the total, seven accidents took place on the Sinamalé Bridge, while 39 occurred across different areas of Malé City. Police data show that 45 vehicles were damaged in these incidents.
The majority of the accidents, 29, happened during daylight hours, whereas 17 occurred at night. Most of the cases resulted in minor injuries, with 43 people sustaining minor wounds and three suffering serious injuries.
Collisions between motorcycles and cars were the most frequent type of accident last week, accounting for eleven incidents. Accidents involving only motorcycles followed with eight. Other recorded collisions included:
- Four between cars,
- Three between cars and pickup trucks,
- Two involving a pickup truck and another vehicle,
- Two between a motorcycle and a pickup truck,
- Two between a pedestrian and a motorcycle,
- Two involving a motorcycle and a bus,
- Two between a motorcycle and a bicycle,
- Two single-vehicle accidents,
- One between a car and a pedestrian, and
- One hit-and-run incident.
Traffic accidents continue to be a persistent issue in the capital area, often resulting in property damage and, at times, fatalities.
