Four Arrested Following Cash Robbery at Velana International Airport

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has confirmed that four suspects have been apprehended regarding the robbery which took place today in the early morning hours at Velana International Airport (VIA). 

Sharing the information on the minister’s official ‘X’ account, he confirmed that, along with catching the suspects involved in the robbery, the speedboat used by the suspects was also recovered by the Maldives Police Service.

In his post, the minister praised the police for the “remarkable progress” made in the case and commended the officers for “their swift and effective efforts in advancing the investigation and securing the suspects.” 

The police have not yet released an official statement about the arrest of the four suspects nor about the recovered speedboat. 

The robbery occurred early Monday morning when a group of masked individuals stole a suitcase containing cash from two bank employees attempting to enter the airport’s newly opened Terminal 1. The incident was reported at 4:45 a.m.

A police media official stated that no police escort was accompanying the bank staff at the time of the robbery, citing that the bank had not requested security in advance. 

The total amount stolen, the identity of the bank, and details of the suspects have not been disclosed.
