Four cases of online harassment against female journalists have been reported to the Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) in the past three months.

In a press release published on the association’s X page, they expressed concern over the increased harassment female journalists in the Maldives have been receiving. MJA harshly condemns such acts and says this will not be tolerated.

They called for a halt to such harassment and for the police to take such cases seriously and investigate them accordingly.

Online Harassment Reported to MJA

  • Photos of Fathimath Madhadha, a journalist from SanguTV, were posted online by an anonymous account on X.
  • Rivayaa News’ Editor Aidha Abdul Hakeem harassed on X over questions she posed to a business owner.
  • Laisha Zakeer, a journalist from SanguTV threatened on multiple social media platforms.
  • Asima Nizar, a journalist from Mihaaru News and an ExCom member at MJA, was threatened online for an article she wrote.

Additionally, according to the MJA, a journalist from Aslu TV, Shama Shaib, was made to delete photographs she took of a police operation on the road by the police.

In their statement, MJA said they were concerned about the increase in harassment aimed towards women in journalism recently.

“The association will not accept any personal vendetta and fearmongering against journalists for doing journalist work,” MJA said in Dhivehi.

MJA noted these were tactics used by some people to destroy the spirits of journalists. As journalism is already a field with low female workers, such continued harassment would lead to the prevention of people entering the field, they said.

“And this would be an obstacle for current female journalists to advance [in their career],” MJA said.
