FPA Expresses Concern Over Increase in Psychological Abuse Reports

The Family Protection Authority (FPA) has raised concerns over a surge in cases of psychological abuse, as revealed by Chief Executive Officer Aminath Shiraanee in a press conference.

CEO Shiraanee expressed deep concern regarding the notable increase in instances of psychological abuse, citing a total of 162 reported cases to date. Additionally, she disclosed that 278 cases of domestic violence have been reported, with 194 involving female victims and 84 involving male victims.

Furthermore, CEO Shiraanee highlighted a rise in reported cybercrimes, including incidents of blackmailing and financial exploitation of parents by their own children.

Shiraanee underlined that a majority of the cases involve individuals struggling with drug addiction. 

She emphasised the FPA’s dedicated efforts to implement preventive measures against domestic violence and abuse, including rehabilitating perpetrators, initiating legal actions through court referrals, and launching a service to provide legal assistance to victims who cannot afford a lawyer.
