The Family Protection Authority (FPA) has expressed concern about the misuse of the MVR 5,000 elderly allowance issued to Maldivians over 65 to help manage their daily expenses.
Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday by the Social and Family Development Ministry, FPA’s CEO Aminath Shiraanee Naeem highlighted the increasing number of financial abuse cases where adult children exploit their elderly parents’ allowances. She noted that one of the FPA’s biggest concerns is that elderly individuals are not benefiting from the financial support intended for them.
“Parents, at the hands of their adult children, are being subjected to various forms of financial abuse. We have noticed issues such as the misuse and withholding of the allowance given to elderly people,” Naeem stated.
She further explained that many of the abusers are identified as drug users, while some also suffer from psychiatric conditions.
The FPA has vowed to investigate these cases and to work diligently to resolve them. The ministry has pledged to do everything possible to address such issues.
