The Family Protection Authority has disclosed domestic violence statistics for the first three quarters of 2023, revealing 181 reported cases and providing insights into their prevalence and distribution across different categories.

When examining the breakdown by gender, it is revealed that 123 cases involved women. Quarter-wise distribution shows 48 cases in Quarter 1, 28 in Quarter 2, and 47 in Quarter 3. On the other hand, 409 cases were reported involving men, with 155 in Quarter 1, 116 in Quarter 2, and 138 in Quarter 3.
The reporting agencies involved in addressing domestic violence received a total of 173 cases. Specifically, the Maldives Police Service recorded 67 cases, the Gender Ministry received reports of 88 cases, the Health Authority noted 15 cases, and 3 cases were reported directly to the Family Protection Authority.
The reported cases were categorised based on the nature of the abuse. Psychological and verbal abuse accounted for 139 cases, while 111 cases involved physical abuse. Additionally, there were 78 cases of exposure of a minor to domestic violence.
