The Fertility Support Community (FSC) launched its second major project, the Patient Care Awards Maldives (PCA), along with its accompanying magazine, during the organisation’s Fundraising Gala Dinner “A Night of Hope” held at Meeruma Hall, Malé.

The initiative aims to bridge gaps between patients and healthcare providers and improve access to accurate information on healthcare services. Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim officiated the launch and presented the first PCA Award to Dr Naila Mohamed Didi, the Maldives’ first obstetrician-gynaecologist and a cofounder of the Society for Health Education (SHE).

The NGO, founded in 2021 and now comprising more than 460 members, also signed an MoU with Milann Speciality Hospitals of India to fund IVF treatment for an additional Maldivian couple next year.

Speaking at the event, FSC’s founder and president, Asha Hussain, reflected on the challenges she faced during her health-related break from advocacy. She said she initially believed she would no longer be able to continue her work due to an epilepsy diagnosis and brain surgery, but returned because she felt a strong sense of purpose.

Asha said the PCA platform and magazine will help ensure patients receive reliable guidance and are empowered to choose the right treatment pathways. She stressed that FSC continues to advocate that couples should not be rushed into IVF and that awareness on infertility must reach all segments of society. She also thanked President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for launching the 100 IVF Scheme through NSPA and Aasandha, and acknowledged contributions from Yaami Fertility to FSC’s Family Fund.

Milann Fertility Hospitals’ Managing Director, Anjali Ajaikumar, praised the Maldivian community’s support for fertility advocacy. She highlighted her shift towards a holistic model of fertility care in which patients are guided by multiple specialists rather than relying on a single doctor’s advice. She said this multidisciplinary system—bringing together IVF doctors, male fertility experts, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, psychologists, nutritionists and general physicians—has shown encouraging results.

Anjali noted that in a recent cohort of 45 couples with multiple previous IVF failures, six had conceived under this approach, and none had dropped out of the programme due to improved satisfaction and tailored care.

FSC said applications for its 2026 IVF Fund have now closed and announced that the organisation will broaden its advocacy through its second initiative, the Family Support Community.
