The Fulhadhoo Council has announced a fine of MVR 750 for tourists staying in guest houses who are found dressed inappropriately in public areas of the island.
In a statement issued following a council session, the council said it had, on multiple occasions, received complaints regarding tourists wearing attire deemed contrary to accepted social standards in public spaces. Despite repeated efforts to address the matter through various measures, the issue has persisted, the council said.
As a result, councillors formally resolved to impose a fine of MVR 750 on guest house tourists who violate local dress norms in public areas. The decision takes immediate effect, according to the notice.
The move comes amid broader national discussions on tourist conduct on inhabited islands. In January, the government announced proposed amendments to regulations concerning tourist dress codes and behavioural standards when visiting local islands. However, no such proposals have yet been submitted to the People’s Majlis for consideration.
