The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has levied a fine of MVR 100 million on AFRICEAN PTE. LTD, the owner of the barge Olympic Kandilo. The vessel, transporting materials for a significant coastal protection project in Fuvahmulah City, ran aground on the reef on July 7, causing damages to a surveyed 4,306 square meter area.

The incident occurred near the makeshift jetty utilised by the project’s contractor, leading to the dislodgment of rock boulders from the barge onto the reef. yHowever, the fine was capped at MVR 100 million as per the Environmental Protection Act regulations.

The EPA has directed AFRICEAN PTE. LTD to settle the fine within 30 days, starting yesterday. Additionally, the agency intends to collaborate with the Attorney General’s Office to pursue legal action for damages once the appeal process concludes.

It is noted that the barge’s owner had previously contested the allegation, denying the vessel’s involvement in the reef incident. The barge reportedly left the Maldives before the EPA concluded its survey.
