Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim made allegations against the current administration led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, during the presidential debate last night.
Accusing the government of various illegitimate actions, Gasim’s remarks have ignited a fervent discussion within the political landscape of the Maldives.
Central to Gasim’s concerns is the alleged involvement of foreign military forces within the Maldives, a topic that he addressed with great emphasis during the debate. He argued that any foreign military presence in Maldives should be subject to parliamentary scrutiny and necessitate approval from a parliamentary majority.
During the debate, he raised questions about the undisclosed agreement between India and the Maldives concerning Uthuru Thila Falhu, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Maldivian National Defence Force but is currently occupied by the Indian military.
He also expressed apprehension over confidential communications between the President of Mauritius and President Solih regarding disputed maritime territory between the two countries.
Furthermore, Gasim underscored the importance of obtaining consent from parliament members when seeking assistance from external parties. He advocated for significant decisions of this nature not to be solely within the purview of the Parliament’s 241 Committee.
These allegations and concerns raised by Gasim Ibrahim have ignited a debate within the Maldives’ political circles, prompting further scrutiny of the government’s actions and policies.
