In a tweet today, Gasim asserted that if the government possesses the means to offer land to the public without charge, it should do so without hesitation. However, he noted that designating land exclusively to specific individuals can result in the denial of others’ rightful entitlements.
Gasim further criticised the practice of collecting more than MVR 2.5 million from underprivileged citizens over extended periods of 20 to 25 years for social housing units constructed on such land. He deemed this approach unjust and untenable. As a result, he has pledged to forgive rents for tenants presently inhabiting various state-initiated social housing units.
Furthermore, Gasim’s manifesto outlines his commitment to the construction of 30,000 residential units during the initial five years of his potential leadership, with the aim of providing housing for all those in need. A significant portion of these accommodations will be specifically allocated to young individuals embarking on new chapters of their lives, such as marriage and independent living.
Gasim’s pledges extend to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) officers, for whom he intends to provide housing. A notable aspect of his proposal is the construction of a dedicated 15-story building exclusively for MNDF personnel.
