Addu City has received a new 1.8-megawatt generator, which was installed and brought into operation this week to address the ongoing power crisis in the region.
The city’s longstanding electricity issues worsened several months ago, with recent reports confirming that four generators had sustained damage, one of which was beyond repair. As a result, frequent power cuts disrupted daily life.
In response, FENAKA, the state-owned enterprise responsible for electricity supply in the city, reached an agreement with STELCO to deliver the 1.8-megawatt generator.
FENAKA has also confirmed that one of the damaged generators has been repaired, while a second is expected to be operational by the end of the week. The third generator will be restored once spare parts arrive from overseas, with repairs expected to be completed within a week.
The company has emphasised that resolving the power issue is a priority, particularly with the upcoming month of Ramadan, which typically sees higher electricity consumption.
Addu City, the second most populous city in the country, requires 12 megawatts of power during peak hours. Its interconnected islands rely on 20 generator sets with a combined capacity of 26.8 megawatts. However, with five generators out of service, power outages have become a frequent occurrence.
