A new chapter in youth digital empowerment began this week as Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives launched the Girls to Code Malé Edition; an initiative aimed at equipping young women with coding skills and supporting their entry into the tech industry.
The programme officially commenced on 15 July with an opening ceremony and orientation session in Malé. Participants, ranging in age from 16 to 30, were selected following an enthusiastic national response to this year’s call for applications, held in conjunction with International Girls in ICT Month.
Over the next three months, the selected participants will engage in a hybrid learning experience, combining virtual and in-person sessions. The curriculum includes hands-on training in programming, web development, and game creation using Python. In addition, dedicated career development workshops will help bridge the gap between learning and employment by encouraging industry engagement and professional growth.
Bishaara Hameed, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at Dhiraagu, noted the programme’s broadened scope:
“Girls to Code has become a movement that empowers young women in the field of technology. This year’s programme in Malé includes workshops on coding, problem-solving, and building self-confidence,” said Aimanath Shiufa, Secretary General of Women in Tech Maldives.
The Girls to Code initiative began in 2019 and has since been held in Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Laamu Atoll, and Dhidhdhoo. It has become a cornerstone project in promoting gender inclusion within the Maldivian tech sector.
