Farmers from Goidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll have become the first in the Maldives to receive certification under the new Maldives Good Agricultural Practices (MGAP) scheme, marking a significant step towards strengthening national food security.

The achievement was celebrated in a ceremony where the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Mariyam Mariya, presented the official certificates to the farmers.

The MGAP certification is a national initiative designed to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly farming. Its objectives include improving food quality and safety, reducing reliance on imports, and enhancing the country’s overall food security.

Speaking at the event, the Minister commended Goidhoo for setting a national example. She highlighted that the certification would encourage sustainable farming practices and improve the quality of local produce, ultimately contributing to greater food security for Maldivians.

She also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, particularly through empowering youth and women in farming and establishing sustainable food systems. The promotion of MGAP-certified products is expected not only to secure domestic food supply but also to create opportunities for Maldivian farm products in international markets.

The Minister emphasised the crucial role of farmers in ensuring food security and driving economic growth, while congratulating the Goidhoo farmers on their achievement. She expressed hope that this milestone would inspire more young people to pursue agriculture.

The MGAP scheme forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance agricultural standards and reduce dependence on food imports.
