The parliament initially passed a resolution advocating for a shift in the governance system on September 20th, with the backing of members from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

During the committee’s extensive debate, The Democrats MP Ilyas Labeeb introduced an amendment to the resolution.

The amendment, which underwent consideration by the entire parliamentary committee, garnered unanimous support from 31 members, with the MDP members within the committee offering their endorsement.

Subsequently, the Parliament proceeded with its session and passed the report from the committee on the resolution presented by The Democrats presidential candidate and MP Ilyas Labeeb, supported by the ruling MDP, with an overwhelming 35 votes in favor.

President Solih had previously outlined that a systematic vote would be requested if the bill secured the approval of three-fourths of the 87 members of Parliament, equating to 66 members, and was subsequently submitted to him for endorsement.

As per the resolution, the President intends to request ECM to conduct the vote before the second round of the presidential election, slated for the 30th of this month.
