Nationwide effort continues as ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ supports vulnerable communities

The government has extended the ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ initiative to 15 atolls as part of its nationwide outreach to assess community well-being and provide targeted support to vulnerable individuals and families.

Launched in May 2024 by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the programme involves visiting households across the Maldives to identify those in need of state support and deliver appropriate services. The aim is to reach every inhabited island in the country within a year.

The Ministry has said the programme is being carried out in collaboration with local councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and other relevant agencies. Through this coordinated approach, the government seeks to strengthen ties between state institutions and local communities while addressing social and economic hardships.

According to Deputy Minister of Social and Family Development Mariyam Lahfa, families identified as vulnerable through the programme are being offered assistance, including employment and skills training opportunities. She noted that the ministry is currently preparing to expand the initiative to islands in Meemu, Vaavu, Alifu Alifu, and Alifu Dhaalu atolls, with the intention of achieving nationwide coverage by the end of the year.

The ‘Haalu Kihineh?’ programme initially began in Hulhumalé and is being implemented in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of building a compassionate and inclusive society.
