The government has expanded health facilities across Noonu Atoll, introducing new services and extending existing ones on multiple islands.

X-ray services have been launched at the health centres in Holhudhoo and Velidhoo. The facilities, inaugurated during Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim’s ongoing tour of the atoll’s inhabited islands, are expected to benefit residents by removing the need to travel to access diagnostic services. The new X-ray units will support doctors in making quicker and more accurate diagnoses, enhancing overall patient care.

The Health Centre in Landhoo has begun 24-hour operations, fulfilling a key policy commitment by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Previously operating for 16 hours daily, the centre now provides round-the-clock care for the island’s population of approximately 1,100. The expansion ensures that emergency services are available locally, reducing the burden and cost of travelling to neighbouring islands for urgent treatment.

An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has also been established at the Noonu Atoll Hospital in Manadhoo, providing critical care services for the entire atoll. The facility was inaugurated by Minister Nazim and is expected to address a long-standing need for specialised medical care within the community.

During the same tour, the foundation stone for a new building at Maafaru Health Centre was laid, and the centre’s operating hours were expanded from 16 to 24 hours. The new facility will include modern amenities such as X-ray services, with further plans to increase bed capacity and add facilities including a nurse station, meeting hall, public health unit, and portico. The construction contract has been awarded to Fenaka Corporation Limited.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening healthcare across all islands, aiming to ensure that high-quality medical services are accessible to every community in the Maldives.
