The government has launched the ‘Eku Ekee’ youth peer education pilot programme in Kulhudhuffushi City, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Social and Family Development and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is aimed at raising awareness among young people aged 18 to 25 on issues related to domestic and gender-based violence. It also seeks to promote equality and encourage positive change within communities.

The curriculum is designed to equip participants with skills in effective communication, conflict resolution, and understanding mental health needs. The training is expected to help young people play an active role in fostering safer and more respectful communities, while providing them with practical experience in key areas such as gender equality and empathy-building.

A total of 18 participants from Kulhudhuffushi, Hanimaadhoo, Kumundhoo, and Vaikaradhoo are taking part in the programme, including four young people with disabilities. By engaging youth directly in discussions and initiatives centred on respect and equality, the programme aims to lay the groundwork for a more equitable and violence-free society.
