Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has stated that the government will hand over the proposed parking building projects to contractors within the next month, with construction expected to begin in three to four months.

The minister said on state media that parking remains one of the most persistent issues in Male’, where the increasing number of vehicles has resulted in severe congestion and limited space. He added that the government’s plan to build parking facilities capable of accommodating more than 7,000 vehicles is aimed at easing the strain on the capital.

Minister Ameen noted that the project requires extensive land and significant financial investment, but said it has been prioritised due to the scale of the problem. Under an agreement signed with the Housing Development Corporation on 3 October last year, 15 parking buildings will be developed in Hulhumale’, providing 4,000 parking units.

The facilities will include commercial parking slots, designated spaces for public vehicles, and charging stations for electric cars. Energy for the buildings is planned to be sourced from renewable systems, while terraces will be leased for cafes, restaurants, and sports arenas.

The minister also emphasised that a considerable number of vehicles currently operating in Male’ are registered outside the capital. He described this as an illegal practice and called for stricter regulatory measures to address the issue.
