The government has signed a new agreement for land reclamation, coastal protection, and critical infrastructure development to support the construction of a domestic airport in Baa Atoll Thulhaadhoo.

The project was initially awarded to Sri Lankan firm Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC) on 12 July 2023, during the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Work commenced on 29 August 2023 but came to a halt following the change in government.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu later announced that the Thulhaadhoo airport project would be reviewed to meet community needs and upgraded to modern standards. The new agreement was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Construction, follows the cancellation of the 2023 contract for dredging works related to the airport.

The state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has now been tasked with the project. The contract includes MVR 570.26 million for dredging and beach protection works, with completion scheduled within 660 days. The earlier CMCC contract had been valued at USD 42.4 million (MVR 653 million).

The agreement was signed by State Minister for Construction Hassan Rasheed and MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed. Under the terms, 55.4 hectares of land will be dredged, 2,804 metres of rock revetment will be installed, and 1,677 metres of geo bag revetment will be completed.

Plans for the airport include a runway measuring 1,800 metres in length and 30 metres in width. The project is part of the government’s wider strategy to ensure that no inhabited island, resort, or industrial area in the Maldives is located more than 30 minutes from a domestic airport.
