The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has announced that the distribution of tuna cases for Ramadan 1446 will begin on 24 January and continue until 11 February, with the process managed through an online token system to avoid queues.
Speaking at a press briefing, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef said the portal to obtain distribution tokens will be open from 12 pm onwards today. He said the system, developed by the Maldives Police Service and used previously, will allow households to collect tuna cases without waiting in line. Complaints related to the process can be submitted via WhatsApp or Telegram to 7741446.
Minister Shareef said distribution will take place nightly from 8:30pm to 11:00pm, except on Fridays. In Malé, each household with a separate electricity meter will be entitled to one tuna case. In the atolls, allocations will be based on household lists compiled by island and city councils, with assurances that every household on the lists will receive a case.

According to figures shared at the briefing, a total of 118,770 households nationwide have been identified for distribution, including 61,755 households in the Greater Malé region and 56,918 households in the atolls. While the minister did not specify the size of the tuna cans, last year’s distribution consisted of 180-gram cans. Based on the current pricing of a 180-gram tuna can case, which stands at MVR 760, the programme is expected to cost around MVR 90.3 million. MIFCO said production of the tuna cans for the Ramadan distribution began in October last year and was completed today.
The distribution will be led by the State Trading Organisation (STO) and the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), with support from several state-owned enterprises and utilities, including Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Police Service, State Electric Company (STELCO), Road Development Corporation (RDC), Fenaka, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
In the Greater Malé region, distribution will take place across 15 centres. Eight centres will operate in Malé, including MIFCO Centre, the Social Centre, MTCC Sawmill, Henveiru Stadium and four entrances at Galolhu Stadium. Hulhumalé will have six centres across Phase 1 and Phase 2. In Phase 1 the centres will be set up in the Umar Zahir Building, Polco Towers, and from Gasim Pre School. From Phase 2, tuna cans will be distributed from Kamil Didi School, Hiyaa Flat 10, and Vinares towers, while a single centre has been designated in Vilimalé at the WAMCO site.
In a separate Ramadan relief measure, the President has approved a special electricity subsidy, capping domestic household electricity bills at a maximum of MVR 400 for the month.
