The government is set to construct a new 10-storey building as part of the Hulhumalé Hospital expansion project, according to Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Male’ Group of Hospitals.

During the PSM News’ ‘Raajje Miadhu’ programme, Abdul Razzaq outlined plans to develop the four hospitals under the Male’ Group — Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Dharumavantha Hospital, Hulhumalé Hospital, and Villimale’ Hospital — which collectively serve hundreds of patients daily across the greater Male’ region.

The new building will be erected on a vacant plot adjacent to Hulhumalé Hospital. The planned facility will feature 250 fully equipped beds, including private rooms. Budget preparations are underway in collaboration with the Ministries of Finance and Planning, Health, and Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.

In addition, a new 28-bed ward is being developed at Hulhumalé Hospital, with completion scheduled before the end of the year.

IGMH, the government’s main hospital, has also undergone significant expansion, including increasing bed capacity, upgrading existing wards, and introducing new services. Plans are in progress to begin cardiovascular surgery and interventional radiology, alongside other new healthcare services.

Regarding Villimale’ Hospital, efforts are ongoing to relocate its services to the former children’s shelter building. This relocation will allow for the demolition of the current hospital structure and the construction of a new, state-of-the-art facility. The project, supported by a grant from the Chinese government, will feature two buildings equipped with specialised beds for outpatient, inpatient, emergency, diagnostic, ICU, and haemodialysis treatment. Construction is expected to commence later this year or early next year.

Abdul Razzaq highlighted that the Male’ Group of Hospitals has significantly enhanced its human resource capacity over the past 18 months, with over 560 new employees recruited since November 2023. Approximately 75 per cent of these new hires are medical staff, including medical officers, specialists, and nurses.

Currently, IGMH and Dharumavantha Hospital provide 32 specialist services. The Male’ Group’s overarching goal is to expand quality healthcare services and infrastructure to reduce the necessity for patients to seek medical treatment abroad.
