The government has announced that all electricity bills charged at the domestic rate will be capped at MVR 400 during the upcoming Ramadan, with any amount above this limit to be discounted.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu revealed the decision during a mass rally held by the ruling People’s National Congress. He stated that the measure forms part of the administration’s annual Ramadan benefits for citizens, ensuring that no household receiving domestic-rate billing will pay more than MVR 400 next Ramadan.

The President also confirmed that households will receive tuna cases next Ramadan, continuing the practice implemented this year. The government provided discounts on domestic electricity bills during the last Ramadan as well, aligning with the President’s electoral pledge to reduce electricity and water bills during the fasting month.

Last year, the government discounted approximately MVR 140 million from utility bills. This year, 111,231 tuna cases were distributed nationwide as Ramadan gifts, at a cost of MVR 81 million, according to the Finance Ministry.
