The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya, has stated that efforts are underway to convert the temporary Farmers’ Market established for Ramadan into a permanent marketplace.

The market was launched on 18 February at the Malé North Harbour area by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in collaboration with Maldives Ports Limited. It was introduced to facilitate the sale of locally grown produce during Ramadan, a period that traditionally sees increased demand for agricultural products from the atolls.

In an interview with PSM News, Dr Maryam Mariya said farmers from several islands had participated in the market. She highlighted Goidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, noting that farms on the island are certified under the Maldives Good Agricultural Practices scheme. She stated that watermelons grown on the island are cultivated without the use of chemicals.

The Minister said that food security remains a priority of the government and is supported through dedicated policies. She noted that the Farmers’ Market contributes to these efforts by strengthening links between producers and consumers.

Discussions are ongoing with several islands to secure certification under the Maldives Good Agricultural Practices scheme, which she described as an important measure to ensure safe and secure food for residents.

Dr Maryam Mariya also stated that the initiative helps maintain affordable prices for residents while creating transport and trade opportunities for the islands. Talks with Maldives Ports Limited are continuing as part of plans to establish a permanent location for the market by the end of Ramadan.
