Gov’t Acknowledges Challenges in Withdrawing Indian Troops

The Government addressed the complexities associated with withdrawing Indian troops from the Maldives, emphasising that the government is aware of the challenges involved, in a press conference held at the President’s Office today.
Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim emphasised the government’s dedication to fulfilling the promise of Indian troop withdrawal, recognising the inherent difficulties and emphasising the importance of adhering to diplomatic norms, rules, and international legal frameworks.
Nazim confirmed the existence of 88 Indian troops in Maldives and pointed out that discussions on the withdrawal process have been the subject of 10 meetings. He further explained that these meetings, held at various government levels since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, have been strategically scheduled and planned. Notably, significant progress is evident in addressing this matter.
Addressing apprehensions surrounding the presence of Indian troops, Nazim conveyed that the matter of Indian troops in Maldives is of significant concern to the people of Maldives and is among the foremost policies of Muizzu. He provided assurance to the public, affirming the government’s commitment to facilitating the withdrawal of Indian troops, while urging the people not to succumb to disappointment.
The government emphasises adherence to diplomatic norms and international legal frameworks in handling this sensitive matter. Further updates on the progress of the withdrawal process will be communicated in due course.
