Gov’t Aims to Complete Canned Tuna Case Distribution in Male’ by Monday
The Local Government Ministry is working to complete the distribution of canned tuna cases for Ramadan in the greater Malé area by the end of Monday.
The distribution of these cases, a government gift for Ramadan, began on February 20. However, the limited number of distribution centres in the densely populated Malé area led to long queues, with people having to wait for hours to collect their tuna cases. In response to public criticism, the Local Government Ministry increased the number of distribution centres and introduced online tokens.

In a post on X on Wednesday night, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar stated that the ministry aims to finish distributing tuna cases in the capital by Monday. He also mentioned that the cases would be reaching Gaafu Alif Atoll and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll on Thursday, completing the nationwide distribution of the Ramadan gift.
Currently, canned tuna cases are being distributed in the greater Malé area between 9:30 pm and 11:30 pm. Tokens can be booked online via the Roadha Hadhiya portal.
The distribution locations include:
- MIFCO Complex in Maafannu
- MTCC Sawmill
- Henveiru Football Stadium
- Galolhu Football Stadium
- Social Centre
- Vilimale’ WAMCO site
- Umar Zahir Building, Hulhumale’ Phase I
- POLCO Tower, Hulhumale’ Phase I
- H10, Hulhumale’ Phase II
- Kaamil Didi School, Hulhumale’ Phase II
The initiative follows a promise made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in November last year, during a ceremony marking his administration’s first anniversary, to distribute tuna cases as a Ramadan gift to Maldivian citizens.
In Ramadan 2024, the government provided discounts on utility bills and distributed 1.6 million kilos of food staples to 82,000 households. This year, President Muizzu has also announced utility discounts.
