During a press conference yesterday, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, addressed the growing number of illegal or unregistered vehicles in the Greater Male’ area. He attributed this to a prolonged lack of regulation and acknowledged the challenges in resolving the issue swiftly.
Initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the ministry sought a dedicated area where these vehicles could be parked while their registration processes are finalised.
Vehicle owners will have 40 days to relocate their vehicles to the Hulhumale’ plot. Once parked there, the vehicles will be allowed to remain for up to six months while registration formalities are completed. The ministry assured the public that vehicles moved to this area will not be towed during this period.
The allocated 40,000-square-foot plot can accommodate approximately 200 cars or four-wheeled vehicles, according to Minister Ameen. From Wednesday, vehicles fitting the specified criteria will be permitted to park in the designated area, with regular monitoring by the Maldives Police Service.
Speaking at the land handover ceremony, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), emphasised that while the allocated plot is a temporary solution, authorities are working on creating permanent parking areas.
The issue of limited parking spaces has become increasingly prevalent in the Greater Male’ area, where the ministry reports over 80,000 registered and operational vehicles, including 4,500 cars.
