Gov’t Announces Plans for Environmental Research Centre in Maldives

The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, revealed that the government is actively pursuing the establishment of an environmental research centre in the Maldives.
This announcement was made during a press conference aimed at updating the public on the ministry’s initiatives over the past six months.
Minister Thoriq highlighted the critical need for such a centre and stated that the government is currently exploring funding options to commence its development. He underscored the importance of the project, noting that while some research is being conducted within the ministry and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there is no dedicated facility for environmental research.
He further elaborated on the collaborative efforts between the ministry and the EPA to initiate work on the project. The minister acknowledged the significant role of private organisations and associations in conducting environmental surveys in the Maldives, but pointed out that these efforts are often limited by financial constraints.
The proposed environmental research centre is expected to enhance the country’s capacity to conduct comprehensive and continuous environmental studies, addressing both immediate and long-term ecological challenges.
The government’s commitment to this initiative reflects its broader strategy to bolster environmental protection and sustainability in the Maldives.
