Gov’t Announces Progress in Waste Management Facilities Across Islands
The Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, has revealed that the installation and testing of waste management facilities are currently underway on 22 islands.
The announcement was made during a press conference focused on the environment ministry’s latest activities.
Minister Thoriq detailed the progress of the national waste management initiative, highlighting the government’s commitment to establishing waste management facilities on islands nationwide. He noted that facilities are being developed on 51 islands, with various stages of completion. These projects involve waste separation and compaction, as well as the provision of necessary equipment for effective waste disposal.
The minister also mentioned that contractors have been appointed to build infrastructure on additional islands. A recent contract has been awarded to 14 more islands, with work already commencing on 10 of them. Facilities required for 15 further islands have arrived in Male’ City and are currently being inspected before dispatch. These facilities are expected to be operational within the next month, with employee training also planned.
Minister Thoriq added that household waste collection and management vehicles have been distributed to 76 islands to date. The ministry is placing a strong emphasis on training personnel involved in waste management, with 20 individuals from 10 islands set to receive overseas training through a project supported by the World Bank.
