Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that India will commence regular delivery of perishable goods to Addu City starting next month.
In a social media post, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MPL outlined the details of the new service, which is a collaborative effort between MPL and Hithadhoo Port Limited.
Scheduled to launch on 1 July, the service will be operated by the Indian-based Finesse Group, the largest importer of fruits and vegetables in the Maldives. According to Wajeeh, the service will run continuously throughout the year, with shipments arriving every 10-15 days.
MPL has only provided this service on specific days, relying on imports from Malé City for the remainder of the year. These shipments typically included items such as eggs, onions, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits. The new vessels will also have the capacity to transport a variety of other food items and general cargo from India, thereby enhancing the supply chain for Addu residents.
In addition to the new permanent service, Maldives State Shipping (MSS) will continue its operations, transporting perishable goods between Addu and Malé. MSS plays a crucial role in bringing goods from abroad to Malé and subsequently transferring them to Addu, ensuring a consistent supply of essential items.
This development marks a significant improvement in the logistics and supply chain for Addu City, promising greater reliability and availability of fresh produce and other necessities for its residents.
