The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, announced that the seaplane Terminal will be relocated to the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort.
The decision aims to transform the current seaplane terminal into a Jet Terminal, a move deemed necessary for the optimal use of airport space and to enhance the efficiency of airport operations.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Minister Saeed stated, “We currently lack an official Jet Terminal. The President believes that establishing a jet terminal and officially commencing this new sector of trade is essential. Additionally, expanding the airport’s capacity is imperative.”
Minister Saeed highlighted that the Maldives boasts the largest seaplane fleet in the world. To facilitate smoother landing and takeoff operations at the main airport, it was decided to relocate the seaplane service to a different island. The area currently occupied by the Sea Plane Terminal will be reclaimed and repurposed to expand the Domestic Terminal.
The present seaplane terminal, known as ‘Noovilu’, was inaugurated in 2022 at a cost of USD 55 million. It currently handles between 4,000 to 6,000 passengers daily. During the low season, approximately 300 seaplane flights are operated daily, with the number increasing to nearly 600 during peak demand.
Minister Saeed noted that the existing seaplane terminal is operating at near full capacity. He further explained that airport development projects in developing countries are ongoing endeavours, with continuous advancements being made over time.
“As the Maldives continues to develop, the expansion of airport services will remain a priority,” Saeed concluded.
This relocation and redevelopment plan reflects the Maldives’ commitment to enhancing its aviation infrastructure to support growing tourism and economic activities.
