The agreements were finalised yesterday during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development. Permanent Secretary Aishath Hikma signed on behalf of the ministry, while Central Line Managing Director Abdulla Asim represented the company.
According to the Ministry, the aim is to complete construction by the end of next year, with both facilities expected to become operational in 2027. The projects form part of a broader strategy to expand access to technical training and higher education across the Maldives.
The Ministry stated that the initiatives are expected to support national goals to enhance youth development. Plans for both the Fuvahmulah TIVET Centre and the Funadhoo Junior College include a multi-purpose workshop, modern classrooms, an ICT laboratory, administrative offices, staff areas, and student-focussed facilities such as seminar rooms, study spaces, libraries, and student services areas.
In addition to strengthening technical and academic pathways, the TIVET Centre will contribute to Fuvahmulah’s development as an educational hub, alongside ongoing projects by the Maldives National University and the Islamic University of Maldives.
The government noted that the projects are designed to reduce geographical barriers to higher education. By establishing comprehensive learning facilities outside the capital, students from across the atolls will have greater opportunities to pursue advanced studies within their own communities, supporting local development and reducing the need for relocation to Malé.
