The government has reversed its decision to discontinue monthly pension allowances for new retirees subject to ‘double pensions.’

Local media reports indicate that the reversal followed direct instructions from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. However, the government has yet to issue an official statement confirming the change.

The Finance Ministry circulated a notice to all government entities announcing that, under a policy set to take effect in January 2025, new retirees subject to double pensions would no longer receive their monthly allowances. Instead, they would only receive the basic retirement pensions. The Ministry explained that the measure was part of efforts to reduce state expenditure.

Double pensions arise when retirees receive an additional allowance, on top of their official pension, at the state’s expense. This additional payment is a result of specific retirement schemes implemented by certain government agencies.
