The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has begun identifying individuals interested in building homes on their own private land under the government’s island-based housing projects.

Earlier this year, in February, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu pledged support for constructing houses on private land in islands where housing projects are planned. This initiative aims to assist those facing financial difficulties by enabling them to build homes on land they already own, while encouraging independent living.

The Housing Ministry confirmed that this opportunity is available on 57 islands where the government will undertake housing projects. The overall plan includes constructing more than 12,000 housing units across various atolls in the Maldives.

The Ministry is collaborating closely with island councils to identify residents who wish to build homes with government assistance on their private plots. Several councils have already issued public announcements, including notices in the government gazette. Interested individuals have been urged to submit their information to their island councils within the specified deadlines.

The housing units to be constructed on private land will be three-bedroom homes. Once the number of such homes is established, it will be deducted from the island’s total housing allocation, with the remaining units built on land designated by the island councils.

These homes will be constructed by the government under the same payment terms as other state housing schemes.

The government has also invited Maldivian and foreign contractors to submit proposals for housing projects across the atolls, with a high volume of submissions already received.

Housing has been declared a top priority by the government for the year. In addition to these projects, loan facilities through Islamic finance are being offered, and various infrastructure works are ongoing.
